The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black
Ok, So, I still have some major posts coming on Book 4, but I have started listening to/Reading Book 5 and here are some things I noticed in "The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black" chapter and just thought I would throw in here: 1. I think that Regulus Black is indeed the RAB who got the locket HC. A Clue is the fact that when they are viewing his name on the tapestry Harry notices, "A Date of Death (some fifteen years previously) followed the date of birth." (p. 112 - emphasis added). Regulus died just before Harry became Voldy's downfall ... I think their is some connection that will be revealed in book 7. 2. The Locket that is mentioned on p 116 follows shortly after the mention of Regulus Black (p. 111-112). It is heavy and, most importantly, it is un-openable. If it is the HC locket, and if RAB managed to destroy the HC, although maybe that was what ended his life, this is a bit like the Palantir used by Denethor and held in his hands as he burned to death by his own hands in Return of the King ... nothing is ever seen through this Palantir again but a pair of palms closed in on it. Once the object has been used for such evil, and that evil undone, the object is forever unopenable, unusable. 3.Thematically, notice that it is Ginny who has the common sense to shut the lid on the music box that is enchanting them all to sleep, just before the locket is mentioned (OotP 116). I think it is a mention of an undone HC prefaced by a hidden reference to she who will be very instrumental on Harry's side in finally undoing the main HC, Voldy himself (Voldy has lost his sense of himself as a real person, he is to himself, on the one hand, an idol, and on the other nothing more than another of his own horcruxes). 4. There is an unusually high occurrence of spider images in this chapter. Just before the music box there is a the many legged silver instrument that "scuttle up Ron's Arm like a spider" just before Sirius smashes it. Next page they move to "from the drawing room to a dining room on the ground floor where they found spiders large as saucers lurking in the dresser." (p. 117) 6. Speaking of Spiders, their intrusions into this chapter is remarkably like the description of a key character/member of the order's presence at the house: "Snape flitted in and out of the house several times more." (p. 118). Oddly, not only does this describe well the presence of spiders as an image in this chapter, it also describes the flight pattern of a bat rather well (in other words, my wild theories are as alive and well as ever LOL) 5. Speaking of the Ground (as in the ground floor where the big spiders were found), I finally noticed the blindingly obvious fact that the house elf is named Kreacher, or rather "creature." He represents nature and the earth animals under the sway of pure-blood bigotry. Notice that Dobby is quite different, but then so were his masters. Lucius was officially a death eater and Dobby could see the "true colors" of the pure-blood mentality. The Blacks were more tender-footed when it came to taking things to their logical conclusions, but they were no less bigoted. |

I like your theories about RAB, Merlin. Very intriguing, but I've been reading and thinking about one of John Granger's theories. He wondered if the cave/horcrux thing was a set up, and I'm beginning to believe it.
He thinks Slughorn is the other person (besides Snape) that Draco was referring to when he had Dumbledore at wandpoint (I just made that up!).
Granger thinks Slughorn either found out what RAB had done or put the locket their himself. The night Aragog died, he was out collecting greens. For the cave potion? Hmmm... And maybe that's why he needed Aragog's venom.
The plan was to get DB in the cave, plant a false lead, and weaken/kill him with the potion.
I have no proof or fleshed out theories, but I don't think RAB is Regulus Black. Too easy.
I forgot to mention that I blogged about Granger's article this morning.
On 4: Ginny seems to be more sensitive to evil objects, probably mainly due to her experience with the diary. (She reprimands Harry about the Half-Blood Prince book - and that's before they're officially "going out"!) This also might be partially due to her becoming more prudent like her mother, being the only other gal in the family.
On Sluggo: definitely a wild card, I agree. Really scared though, but which of Voldemort's supporters aren't scared of him? Maybe if he is party to Dumbledore's demise it's his way of trying to appease the ole' Lord of Darkness. Also re: spiders - Slughorn has a lot of spider imagery surrounding him. The acromantula venom, Harry's first impression of him as a large spider, also Ron get's poisoned in his "lair"... what say ye?
And....speaking of spider venom, remember how what happened with Frodo at the end of the "Two Towers"? Samwise thought he was dead.... Boy, that would be the ultimate hat tip to Tolkien if Sluggo cooked up a fake death potion out of Aragog's venom!
Hadn't thought of Sluggo as a baddy ... but, hmmm, very interesting ... I like the poisoning in the Lair ... and I agree, if there was a fake death potion from the venom - that would be cool beyond belief.
As far as the locket HC being a red herring - I'm wary of that, just seems like it is actually an HC there. Voldy might be up to fake leads, but at some point it seems to me like JKR isn't into the "ultimate 'fooled you' game" ... I think at some points she probably says to herself that, of course fans will be guessing some of the things (espially if they are understanding what she is trying to communicate in the works, which is every author's ultimate hope if they are worth their salt, and she is definitely worth her salt). Along the lines of the alchemical pairings, Ron and Hermione had to wind up together, and along the lines of the traditional hero story Ginny has to be Harry's match (even if they do not "wind up together" because he is dead etc) ... Before book 6 Rowling put up fairly well-known ruse-wall of tongue-in-cheeking about all the speculations ... but in the end she wrote the story she had in mind from the beginning ... she knows that no matter how much we figure out, it will still be a huge joy of discovery as to how she actually does it (and the amazing dialogue she does it in)
As far as RAB being too easy, maybe that's the beauty of it ... She likes Voldy having some perverse trend of using emotionally abused under-dogs ("knows it might not be best but can't help himself" kind of thing) - in the cases of Wormtail and Barty JR it worked for him, maybe before with RAB it did not and he does not know it yet. ... you have to admit, it worked GREAT for him with PP and BC Jr - both were KEY to his return to a body and power.
Note the conspicious but consumately done absense of Regulus' middle name - if this is it she worked it out immaculately. There is no pattern of knowing th names of any of the family, or really anyone in the works except DD and Voldy (that I can think of) ... so why would it be odd that we don't get his? it would be more odd if we did ... but if she had put in a middle name beginning with A - that would definitely be too easy ... just enough of a teaser to get your imagination spinning wildly but not give it away, that's what I think.
LOL, on myself and the obviously conspiracy theory nature of my last comment, recall this fromthe movie "Conspiracy Theory":
Alice: Ok, Ok Jerry ... but do you have ANY evidence of any of this?
Jerry: Of course not, a good conspiracy is one you can't prove.
:)
Dumbledore seems to use 2 things to get Slughorn to come to Hogwarts. One is the ring of Slytherin, the other is Harry. Seeing the ring troubles Slughorn, but maybe it serves to show him that Dumbledore knows about the horcruxes and has a plan to win against Voldemort. Now that Dumbledore is gone, might he recalculate in book 7 and switch to the other side? I think it would be a great temptation for someone like him; we'll have to wait and see if he passes the test.
